Like a Tree by the Water

Dear Friends,
The Psalms are a great source of encouragement.
Psalm 1 begins:
“Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
2 but whose delight is in the law of the LORD,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,”

I wonder if you have noticed such trees. They offer abundant shade as well as being fruitful. But they also help to provide stability to the bank and prevent it from being washed away.

When our lives are rooted in scripture and by spending time meditating on God’s word, we will find that peacefulness and be a source of peace and fruitfulness to those around us.

It is refreshing to know that God’s word can be a healthy alternative to the way of wickedness which can often lurk within us. The challenge for every disciple is to set time aside each day to develop the daily discipline of bible reading. It all depends upon the pattern of your day. For me, it’s usually in the morning, either before the children wake up, or once they are delivered to school.

I sometimes find that peaceful moment walking beside the brook outside our home or sitting in the school car park before driving to Flanders, sitting at my front door as I wait for the school bus. May you also find time and space for your reading, meditation and prayer.
